Nicole
Nova Scotia to Quebec

Explore Canada was the most terrifying, yet amazing thing I've done for myself thus far. To be honest, I was thinking of not going two days prior to my departure. See here's the thing: I'm AWFUL at making friends, but I'm wicked at keeping them & while I barely spoke French, that didn't frighten me.

To my delightful surprise, I ended up meeting a group of friends the first night there and spent the next five weeks with them. I cherish the friends I've made and I miss them dearly. We still stay in touch, and I plan on visiting one of them on Christmas break!

As for the language portion of the trip…  The first thing that freaked me out was the plane ride from Montreal to Quebec City… Everyone on the plane was speaking French and I was just sitting there trying to pick out random words I had learned in elementary school. The flight attendants all spoke English but not very well. Upon entering the airport (which might I say, is VERY tiny) I was greeted by a large group of animateurs with signs saying “Welcome to Montreal!”. They spoke to me first in French and when they saw my facial expression they translated in English for me.

The classes were manageable and sometimes challenging. The activities offered were great. There were some free ones, and some you had to pay for.

By the end of the program I wasn't fluent in French, but I could formulate sentences with the exception of one or two words in English. Not to sound full of myself, but I was practically a pro at Franglish (French & English mixed together).

If you are thinking about taking the program, I highly urge you to do so. Even if it's completely out of your comfort zone, it will be the best thing you ever did. My last day, I didn't want to leave and as I said, I didn't want to go in the first place… So that's saying a lot!
